Apple Lightning connector a Load of crap – basically its a crappy proprietary USB2 variant – FUCK APPLE

putting chips in the cable whose only purpose is to detect if they are genuine or not is immoral behaviour on apples part, non magnetic latching is also rubbish, considering they make the magsafe connector, if were stuck with the lightning connector for the next 5 years thats a disappointment, especially since ‘currently’ its effectively just another adulterated proprietary variation on usb2 ‘Fuck Apple’ as far I’m concerned, hope the EU force them to use the same standards agreed – micro USB connector, Lightning my Arse, obsessed they are with making slimmer everything, including difficult to manufacture overpriced usb2 variants.

Apple forums pointless, way too heavily censored for the slightest apple criticism.

at discussions.apple.com below is written what I attempted to post in response to this forum post titled “Unexpected Shut down when moving macbook pro on my ‘lap'”, which apple for reasons of censoring ego seem not to allow >

Ignore the volunteer extremely cookie cut response high post count forum trolls, that seem only to exist to hand out the same obvious reflex responses on apples censored forums, to annoy and negatively instantly recommend the usual rubbish of … user error / back up everything / try a wipe re-install or go to an apple store and pay them money. The only valid advice given by such trolls is to make sure you have a backup. Theyre the equivalent of the people whose stock response to everything is “google it”, which is not actually bespoke advice, and at its core the statement fails to recognise that anything fruitfully “googled” on the web was contributed by somebody actually adding hopefully useful information to the internet, and such useful information is not magically created through the act of just googling alone, its put their by someone often in a discussion with others.

Some of us low post count but expert users understand your here in the forum, because your seeking pro-active positive advice from users who’ve experienced such issues before themselves, not seeking stock trite responses, every industry of technical understanding has the same parade of characters, some less useful than others.

    OK actual Advice :

What Linc fails to highlight is SMS stands for Sudden Motion Sensor, “Sudden” being the operative word, ie it supposed to protect the hard drive from a traumatic movement like how an airbag is actuated in a car, and should not be going off when a laptop is being carried to a new location table to sofa etc. I have noted some apple laptops in which problems as you describe occur. and it often comes downs to one of four things>

1 There has been issue with SMS going wrong on certain hard drives and being overactive, this has been noted especially after upgrades. Some drives are not compatible with apples system and falsely mis-report sometimes apples system is too sensitive : read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1935. you can thankfully disable SMS if you want. if this resolves your problems your good to go. just don’t swing your laptop about after disabling it, as Linc1 is in fact correct in stating that sudden repeated terminations of disk activity can cumulatively damage data on the drive and impair and damage the hard drive long term.

2 loose connections in the laptop disturbed by movement, its worth carefully reseating most easily accessible internal connectors and memory

3 Since the final conclusion of logic board failure is so expensive it can sometimes be worth replacing the cheaper PMU board in case there is some operative heat based component failure or flexing issue there, causing it.

4 Or … there is sadly and most devastatingly a dry joint on the logic board, which when flexed by carrying movement ( never carry a laptop by one corner, always use two hands on the sides) causes the laptop to instantly shutoff, in this case a new logic board will be required, solder reflow of dodgy boards can work temporarily but rarely in the long term. apple not providing parts to end users, means we have to rely on the unreliable 2nd hand market, and purchasing a replacement logic board on ebay is usually a lottery.(no lead in solder any more (military got an exemption on that … note) and endless surface mount ball grid array manufacture, for board and chip sandwiches that get too hot … doesn’t help)

I would rule out … points 1, 2 and 3 in the order above before concluding 4

NB> temp based shutdown

its also always worth getting marcel bresinks genius and free “temperature monitor” software and making sure your not experiencng thermal shutdown due to high cpu temperature. apple ‘lap’ tops are not brilliantly ventilated and should always rest on a hard surface when on your ‘lap’ to allow sufficient airflow under and around the laptop, placing them on a duvet is a recipe for disaster, cpus have diferent thermal shutoffs around 100deg c, the lower temperature the components operate in your laptop generally the longer they live, you cpu should preferably never be exceeding 80deg in general use, the cooler the better also there is various fan control software to aid this heat scenario SMCfancontrol, fan control etc, listen for fans ramping all the time.

ifixit is a much better place for discussion as concerns out of warranty repair of apple products.

Why you may ask yourself is the premium priced & branded computer you bought going wrong and you finding yourself seeking help on these forums, a small number of years after you purchased your computer, It’s because chinese standard manufacture quality which can rarely offer premium build quality, is generally the same standard across mainstream brands for all chinese manufactured goods, Reliability and build quality whether a £400 or £1000 laptop is roughly equal, mainly the cost of major component parts used is what creates the price difference, eg CPU / display / graphics / Disk parts cost etc.

In the end i went on to make the following post … just to see whether it would get through ?

wierdly a post that contains no useful information does ? typical …

“Had some relevant points to add to this discussion, but apples endless usual ego based, forum censorship stasi – prevent my post from appearing, I bet even this wont appear either, apples forums are basically a marketing excercise, I’d look elsewhere help, its time the users left apple to themselves on these forums.”

the post above was also eventually removed … by the apple forum stasi …

A real film / documentary … “The act of killing”

best documentary I’ve seen this year … see this film … seriously, Though Indonesia is the canvas, this film portrays what happens when a society conducts purges of undesired groups the government make alliances with the worst kind of people and then are forever in bed with them complicit and also the government and power can be made of such people even , this documentary highlights the real incivility and poverty of being a human being still in 95% of the world, sadly it seems there are so few moral decent people in the world, the western world very much included in that statement, seriously how are human beings such bankrupt immoral things, but then the memory of year zero and pol pot balance this out in the sense, that atrocity and sadism are part of the human realm whichever side of the political fence, there is no god or retribution for immoral behaviour, except the judgement of our own conscience, and where the scale and scope of that consciousness is limited and weak, terrible things happen, hell is here on earth and its visible in those who commit evil and those who suffer its consequences are the canvas for its depiction, and every complicit silent person in between those two extremes. And how it goes on and on, even now and it seems it will in the future, bleak, but no truer film has yet been made.

App Store based software update crapping out again … waiting etc

For some reason my software update seems to think it’s “waiting” for my brother printer 2.10 update forever, I also note that this brother 2.10 update is probably stalled, most likely because the driver updates software update is trying to install, are probably not as up-to-date as the mountain lion brother printer drivers that I quite recently installed manually from the brother website itself? and it cant quite deal in the background with the, the drivers already installed are more up to date etc ?

These App Store software update issues are a problem with Apple trying to simplify things too much and bind the software update system unnaturally into the App Store, when it doesn’t really run as smoothly as the old software update system, Which was far superior when it comes to updating the operating system, you once had the ability to store and download and retain installers permanently useful for very large, combo installers that you need to install on multiple machines, negating the necessity of re-downloading on every machine you needed to update, wasting both bandwidth and commercial time, obviously you can trawl the Apple website to find an update and downloaded and retain it, so you can install on many machines etc, but that used to be something that was easy to do do through the software update system without having to bother to trawl the Apple website which is better. You could do a specific noncontiguous selection of updates which were to be installed and which could be installed all in one hit, without much messing around or supernumerary restarts. Also there was a great deal more feedback as to what was going on, the word “waiting” and no petrol gauge doesn’t inform the users of much.

Also I note that you don’t get the ability to select individual updates to be done unless you click on the word “more” which isn’t used in such a way within gui’s or interfaces, except to refer to “more…” as in for extra textual description which has been truncated click here to see the whole text, rather than individual software install functionality etc, but in fact the individual update selection update buttons are hidden behind this “more” in non obvious manner. Additionally if you don’t want to install an update it will sit there for ever more in the list dangerously hidden behind the always reduced “more” text every time you launch software update within the App Store, leaving the potential danger of it being installed when you don’t want it to be, iTunes 11 anyone ? no thanks, or brother printer update I don’t need ? that will always fail to install, even if I accidentally set it to install, when I don’t want to, because it’s hidden behind the “more” text and I just clicked the main update button. It should be possible to remove printer updates if one doesn’t want them in the list.

I recommend the following article in order to sort these issues out, again allot of pissing about with websites and complicated things, in order to sort out the supposedly easy to use Apple software, sometimes it’s better to give the users more control rather than ask them to find out about how to resolve the problem, and find out what the real complexity looks like, behind the failing veneer of simplicity, this will usually involves lots and lots of forum searching, this guy has a really good article about how to resolve problems with software update on the App Store so I recommend you to have a look at his great post, rather than groping around in forums yourself.

app store stuck stopped waiting ? use this guide to sort it out

album only tracks in itunes

a little too much “Album Only” on songs in some places were being driven to buy whole albums, ie padded albums like we suffered in the physical era.

if necessary up the price for longer track parts of concept albums, but don’t bind people into buying whole albums ? as per usual apple learn the lesson of “Giving the User control and choice” ?

trusting people can cause you allot of pain in the end

a story of betrayal

so his cubex channel was taken over password reset and linked into world of longplays, hmm we will see how this goes, but im sure allot of angst now rests with hipponios and ironclaw, the scenario where only certain people benefit from the longplay success is, those who collect the renumeration from youtube partnering, hopefully there will be some justice one day, but it seems unlikely. a community effort subverted ?

App store more detailed post

This is a formal complaint and desire for feedback from Apple support Admins (simple apple loving forum trolls beware my wrath) as to how to sort various issues, with the OS X app store application, I’d prefer to have a separate software update system for operating system updates, as at least the previous system seemed to work cleanly whereas the new app store version does not ? another 3 hours of my life dedicated to solving problems with an operating system which didnt exist in the previous versions of the OS ? rather than actually getting work done with my 27″ imac recently updated to mountain lion.

Some updates appear twice simultaneously in the app store updates section for example the imovie 9.0.9 update appears once as an individual update and once within the system updates ? in the image below, not noticing it was bundled within the system updates, as I had that folded up at the time, I clicked on the individual separate 9.0.9 imovie update. and the following badly written error dialog appears :

app store updating bugs

app store updating bugs

But I did discover doing the same update, but from the top system related software updates section instead of the singular lower app updates section, meant the update would install, but with some other bugs, including the singular update remaining in the lower list and the icon of the installed app being blurry/pixelated until I had restarted the machine.

this same error also happened for the singular iPhoto 9.4.3 update, which was only installed successfully when installing from the software update section link, and once it had installed, the icon for iPhoto was blurry and pixelated until I restarted the computer, but even then once the iphoto 9.4.3 update had installed it refused to then remove the update from the singular section of updates at the bottom of the screen, the app store seemingly still thinking it needed installing ? this really isn’t good enough as a system

some application update failed to install at all and then refused to appear as updates that needed doing afterwards, so I lost two system updates entirely, a safari being one of the updates which disappeared and now im stuck on 6.0.4 as the app store doesn’t think they’re are any updates for safari needed and doesn’t show them ? or maybe the 6.0.6 update was withdrawn as I can find no reference to it on the web at all ? and the log doesn’t mention it either ? this is where a user viewable history of app store activity with purchases and updates installed / apps installed etc would be very valuable.

I have also seen the app store mis-register whether apps are installed at all, ie perceiving them to be installed when they’re not etc ?

and refusing to allow the deinstall or re-installs of apps properly through app store interface ?

OK here is my point …

its one thing to foist on your users, your software cash till the “App Store” onto each and every machine and run your own DRM system through it which by default attempts to prevent the installation of software other than through your own cash till the App Store but >

Its another thing entirely … to replace a system that at least worked for system software updates, ie the old “software update” system, with a new app store system software updates system, which in relative fair comparison is shot through with bugs and annoyances, this is completely a backward step in my actual experience in comparison to the system it replaced ? here are a list of the bugs i’m experiencing as a user of this “app store”

1: conflicts seeming to occur between system software updates and singular app store app updates which the app store then come up with an error for that doesn’t explain the issue.

2: App store not properly registering which app’s are installed or whether they’ve been uninstalled manually ? this maybe indicates that app removal should be a part of the app store. and that perhaps it should be able.

3: no decent way of reinstalling app’s completely, that consistently works

4: system software updates failing to install and then not successfully being to recover from a filed update and offer the same update again, no in my scenario those updates just vanished from being visible to the app store system, what was it marking them a successful install beofre it had succeeded at updating them ?

5: no way, as within the previous software updates system to select multiple individual updates and have them queued to install sequentially whilst skipping a specific update I don’t want ? ie say itunes 11 for instance, this was easy and completely feasible with the previous software updates system tick based system far superior in my opinion ?

6: secondarily I could within the previous system software update system choose to store specific system software update downloads and use them to update other machines rather than having to spend time afresh red-downloading the same updates on other individual machines, which is much faster on poor bandwidth scenarios, for large combo updates etc than the current system ? especially for those people who support many many machines for a living like I do ?

7: some updated app icons being blurry after update until I did a restart of the machine

8: I have even had the scenario where the ‘app store’ mistakenly thought an app in this case which was free ie ‘blackmagic speed test’ was installed when it was not and then refused to allow me to download the app again, yet it was only available in the app store ? and this issue could not be got round by downloading the app from the makers site, as they were foolishly relying on your ‘app store’ as its only delivery method to their users ?

9: Without a deinstall option, I have as i’m sure many others might attempt a de-install by clicking on the x next to an installed app, only to realise that does some weird kind of hiding of the purchase, that then has to be reinstated in some complex way, which only accidentally discovered by chance, and manual uninstalls do not seems wise expecially when drm is involved but the app store does not seem to have any un-install system ?

10: there is no list of licences ore serials purchased when you purchase an app so that you can see what seats/family licences have been used and on what computers, and no way of making the purchases on the app store portable to any other setup, thereby making the licences that are purchased int he app store much less valuable than purchasing an actual serial numbered piece of software

11: certain applications, are no longer un-installable mail being one of them, which if you attempt to remove it from the OS will completely knacker your os install and mail setup such that it is no longer possible to cleanly reinstall it, any application even if produced by the OS provider should not be so deeply wound into the os such that it cant be removed cleanly and reinstalled, not allowing this is a this is a major failing.

12: No decent history system to see which updates and apps were successfully installed, apart from trawling through and decoding install logs, highly non user friendly.

13: It needs a way to establish which application and where installed its trying to update, like a reveal in finder button, as its is fully possible depending on the drives connected to have older apps and alternate version of apps installed in more than one place, and this confuses the apps tore as it doesn’t understand such intricacies and doesn’t know what to manage and what to ignore.

14: And of course as per usual because if it all operates of just one apple ID only at a time, it doesn’t take account, households with more than one apple ID and being logged in with more than one apple ID on one computer at a time, which is one of the reasons to run the system off serials and licences etc.

15: And if apps are installed system wide how do separate users even with separate apple ID’s handle being logged in on the same machine or not ? do they all gte access to the apps or just the user etc etc etc, the potential and possible problems go on

16: how do you specify that a machine should be removed from the licensing for for an an app ? you only appear to be able to do this by removing the entire apple ID at a time.

17: how do you transfer a licence from one apple Id to another ? basically currently an impossible no no.

18 what happens when a couple share an ID separate how can you separate who gets what apps ? you cant, the system is to some extent limited and flawed and will remain so, cheapening the value of software purchased from the app store, from a value perspective over time, or if eventually the App store eco system or Apple itself has its demise, how does one transfer the value out of the apple app store apple ID ecosystem in general ? you don’t – your setup currently to lose that value as its more a kind of rental license, but lets say you to reinstall the software on another system other than apple you couldn’t ?

all these bugs are much worse than the old software update system ? which it now seems was much more finessed and without such stressful issues ? recently i feel like im getting a worse operating system with the newer releases, lion and mountain lion etc, and as a tech support have cause me massive amount of unecessary work to sort out the problems your new OS have caused. Snow Leopard was the last decent improvement in my opinion, what on earth were you thinking with removing “save as” or locking files after 2 weeks without being opened ? it seems your making more booboo’s than getting things right, and I think its best you hear it rather than living in a dillusion ? why are you finding it so hard to make the right user interface decisions creatively ? if your intending on dumming down os x to make it operate like ios and converge, you will not find me as a customer willing to put up with it, computer operating systems have to be functional for doing real work ?

solutions please ASAP to this currently buggy system ? and don’t suggest a “clean install” otherwise i may as well use a Microsoft operating system ?

Having attempted to put this post to apple on the support communities it appears to have been summarily deleted, as per usual indicating to me that apple support forums really just offer them the greatest form of censorship possible for their own software products. And proof if any were needed that all company forums should be independently run separate from the company by law.

Why Time machine is an uncontrollable heap of crap

Im backing up a machine using time machine 212Gb of source data, so far the time machines backup of this 212GB takes up 472GB on the backup drive and growing, why such a differential because it stores deleted versions of files and changes etc ? does the user get any control over how much extra data/version time machine backs up ? answer NO. SO time machine will continue to gobble up hard drive space regardless of what you want until the drive is fit to bursting and then it will start culling things from the backup, based on its own decision making process, how fucking arrogant of the software’s designers to presume that this might be acceptable to the user ? again just like everything in os x its being dumbed down and no controls are being given to the user of any merit, no apparently were of such little intellectual merit we wont be able to handle concepts like limiting the backup size to a certain percentage more than the source files size, or just limiting overall the proportion of a drive that maybe dedicated to such tasks no apparently time machine must have the right to keep filling up our drive till its fit too bursting, leading to a much more like scenario, for the drive to fail imo opinion when theyre 95% full ? apple get a grip people might not want to get dedicate an entire drive to time machine and many of those users wont understand about partitioning. STOP dicating to the user how things are going to be, im not a masochist, give me control.

The state of MAME on OS X

It’s quite bizarre how difficult it’s become to run MAME on OS X, 10 years ago it was a matter of downloading an app, and a few roms etc. Now it seems the only current app is a command line and that you have to install a framework create folders and specify locations etc, really quite primitive compared to how it once was.
