Apple cost their customers with future compatibility with USB3 delivery 2.5 years late

Apple cost their customers dear with future compatibility with USB3 delivery, as they were 2.5 years late to put it on their computers,

The USB Promoter Group announced the release of USB 3.0 in ‘November 2008’

, apple had from this moment the opportunity to begin the process of implementing it in its products, the first usb3 peripherals and products shipped in november 2009 and january 2010.

But the first apple devices to have usb3, came out in June 2012 and the first imacs in october 2012!

Effectively macs were late to the usb3 party, by 2 and half years by any measure, if not 4 years late from the promotor groups announcement.

USB3 may not be the worlds greatest standard, but it is very cost affective per port compared to apple thunderbolt, which apple pushed in advance of USB3, what do I use my thunderbolt ports for today you might ask ? As little more than fancy DVI outputs ! for two monitors, thunderbolt is overpriced and under-delivering in terms of utility or fruitfulness, except for a high end market that is not representative of many a general ordinary apple consumer, which apple seems to have forgotten.

Add still today in 2017 apple are offering only USB2 on nearly all of their iOS devices! apples lighting port has not been upgraded to USB 3 speeds except I believe for the pro line of ipads!

On USB2 imacs like my mid 2011 you are limited to a maximum of (480 MBps protocol speed) ie around 48 megabytes as second transfers speeds to an iphone via lightning, alternatively over wireless AC regardless of acclaimed headline maximums speeds like 1100 MBps per second from a two foot apart with direct air line of sight best case scenario between devices and router, most people might realistically get around 400Mbps from a wireless AC router, so really still just around 40 Megabytes a second via iTunes wifi syncing might be expected, where as the the storage internal to an iphone 6s plus 128gb can write at over 279 megabytes a second, transferring data from macs to ios devices(except the pro ipad) is therefore inordinately and antiquated-ly slow compared to most android phones.

I feel that much of this is deliberate in that apple don’t really want you transferring data at acceptable speeds between your computer and your iphone, they want you to use it as a media consumption device and to pay for and download everything on your devices from their – cashtill stores. Also their single chip storage designs means that although read speeds with nvme express maybe good on their phones since the 128gb models onwards upto say 1.8 gigabytes a second, until their chips are multi channel or more chips and address lanes are used – write speeds on 128gb models around 270 Megabytes a second- wont match read speeds pace. as single chips designs will always have limited performance unless bespoke designed internally.

icloud keychain local items more mess and confusion

again apple change stuff, that may well cause more problems, certainly from a UI point of view, keychain access is now worse, as i have to make an extra click to switch between login or local for a keychain item, im hunting for, dependant on where mavericks decided to place it in either local or login?

more mess and confusion well done apple ! and the fact local gets renamed icloud when that is setup, I have not dared turn icloud keychain on, just incase makes things a great deal worse, especially as you now need another password/pin to secure the darn thing.

All additional features should be by default off and when OS upgrading, and only turned on by the user I don’t want this local keychain particularly, and would certainly like a technical explanation as to when mavericks decides to create a keychain item within login or local ? and whether there is any control over this, presumably this mess means that only new keychain items are put in “local items” post mavericks upgrade, when syncing with icloud will actually be synced, like the abortion of “icloud notes” “icloud calendars” and “icloud contacts” where sometimes form a sync perspective post upgrade it will ignore older notes/calendars/contacts it deems not to be in the icloud syncing group – messy messy messy.

and as per usual apple will give little obvious explanation or user controls as to how to resolve such complex issues, because they magically promote “it will just work” when in fact it very often doesn’t and resolving such scenarios is made by obfuscation and a lack of visual user control.

I also doubt that apple will provide an app to view keychains cleanly on ios, SO i will stick with keychain2go as a solution to my problem, which enables me to view and edit around 10,000 various passwords in 500 notes all secure in iOS, i very much doubt iCloud syncing can handle that and give the user access, its all no doubt hidden and in the background.

Also note apple I have alway despised your disappearing outbox on all your platforms, it has caused me no end of grief, make it permanently appear and remain or give me a user setting to be able to decide for myself whether it is visible or not, turning of internet access to make it appear is an awful kludge.

album only tracks in itunes

a little too much “Album Only” on songs in some places were being driven to buy whole albums, ie padded albums like we suffered in the physical era.

if necessary up the price for longer track parts of concept albums, but don’t bind people into buying whole albums ? as per usual apple learn the lesson of “Giving the User control and choice” ?

Uk taxes paid amazon apple google

There is indeed a relevance in apple amazon and google paying more corporation tax in the country’s in which they generate revenue. But let’s be honest I wouldn’t mind seeing the value creation that amazon generates for the customer, also happening from governments to the voters, lets say the governments of the eu get an extra 1 trillion by closing loopholes, and thankfully luxembourg stops getting stuffed with revenues ? what’s the betting those same eu governments have an ever greater ability to squander that tax generated ? investment wise than amazon do ? That money would be instantly sucked up and disappear into a bloated benefits system often exploited by foreigners, it maybe we need to recoup that tax. But I can assure you the government will squander as usual whatever is raised . And in terms of tax avoidance I’m sure the the foreign owned and run small shops and cafes in my high street would be closed and empty if it weren’t for the cash economy and the shenanigans of claiming losses year in year out, not that rates aren’t killing most businesses there. But It seems to me that most businesses in my high street must survive by making big losses, with hidden cash based cash flows that don’t register, that’s my conclusion anyway ? Of course there are the success story retail outlets in the high street paying taxes but I think they represent just a small portion of the struggling high street. But weirdly the entrepreneurialism just goes on, even after I’ve seen 6 restaurants open and close within a year. The sector where are still making silly money and paying little tax if any the property rentals sector. That needs tackling just as much.

Crucial M4 or C300 SSD, definitive to patch trim support on or not, and best imac ssd install guide

here is some info to back up the idea that even even crucial suggest that trim being on is good idea and anandtech say you should run with trim on for the M4 even though it has garbage collection, I got this info from another site :
apple support forums M4 trim discussion post
in the above forum post it references two articles below about crucial SSD’s and whether garbage collection is sufficient, the jist of it is, in the crucial c300 and M4’s ssd drives case it is worth running the drive with trim on.
crucial forum post 1
crucial forum post 2
and an anandtech article clearly stating that the crucial M4 needs an os with trim support to make sure that performance doesn’t degrade long term, with performance metrics to back it up.

and if you need help in enabling trim i recommend to enable trim using this method :

if anybody is finding that there trim support got disabled in 10.8.3 12D78 or the instructions to enable trim didn’t work with their ssd on ML 10.8.3 12D78, then I recommend having a look at this python patcher,
python trim patcher & instructions
but bear in mind its not for amateurs or the faint hearted, but it worked for me in getting trim support enabled on a crucial M4 128gb drive when the terminal commands in this article didn’t work. place the python file in root and sudo run it with the apply argument as noted in the instructions and bear in mind instruction get the python.py file name wrong compared to that in the zip so you will have to be aware of this and correct for it. please read the instructions etc.

if you have got trim enabled a while after the SSD has been in use ? and what to clear freespace on the SSD to ensure that trim and Garbage collection is done, then >

“You can do it by booting into single user mode (CMD + s) and then typing fsck -ffy at the root prompt and it will erase all free spec and prep for TRIM.”

once the fsck command has worked enter
reboot

to restart the computer, and a fuller explanation re fsck process here why apple has decided to remove the erase free space option for SSD’s i have no idea ? except they presume TRIM has been on since install, although I know of plenty of users who have apple SSD from purchase that claim they have come with trim OFF, so i’m not sure thats a valid reason to take this option from the GUI user ?

not at the point of needing to enable trim … as you have yet installed one ? Need a guide to install an SSD in a mid 2011 imac ?
click on the link below ?

if you need the best/simplest and cheapest method to install an ssd in your imac mid 2011, I recommend the best ive found by toby guide here

The Apple II – expensive but good for its time

The First computer I used, little did I realise this computer was far superior to that which I would own myself until at least 1985, but then at the cost a 48k Apple II was, that could be expected, Though I only saw this machine hooked upto a green screen, I remember its software being particularly good for the time, Apple invaders was an almost perfect clone of space invaders and there were many other intriguing software demos, I remember one with an interactive room, in which a person in a picture winked at you and various things like that, maybe it was an early hypercard demo ? but for the time it was an amazing machine.

Preview snow leopard and dpi WTF apple

why does preview’s Tools>Adjust Size menu option always seems to be greyed out, how am i with the Os supposed to get control over the DPI setting without resising the file so as to stop stupidly displaying images at print res on screen rather than the actual screen pixels ??!?!?! most content remains digital and doesnt get printed nowaday so why the osx team put an emphasis on print dpi within the OS, We as users should at least have some F***ing control over this ! thanks apple for presuming again you know better than the user !

more bollocks’ed up thinking at apple in terms of image attachment in ios6

more bollocks’ed up thinking at apple in terms of image attachment in ios6

this guys has unravelled / deciphered the chain of hidden auto mystery shit / design decisions, so you dont have to, including apple placing the wrong extension on the images it attaches ? christ …

Fucking Time machine OS X

Why does apples heap of uncrontrollable shit time machine insist that in order to backup 920gb of data onto 1tb with 990gb free on it, it magically needs over 1.11tb of space wtf ! the backups are larger than the original ? so buying two drives identical drives and imagining you can backup the contents of one to the other is basically a crock of shit … and why does it not tell me this in advance ? before I delete my old backup fucking wank … wank … wank … wank. Apple stop making user friendly Auto bollocks with no controlloble options ? why have i only got an exclude list, why cant I have an include list instead ? why do I get no control over ther versions of files it stores why on earth is the backup in your own proprietory bullshit mega disk image accessible through a time interface ? what if that disk image doesnt want to open someday ? at least with a standard folder copy individual files will always be accessible ? hmm

and why when i decide well fuck it i dont need a backup system that makes backups larger than the original, and turn the heap of shit off and deassigning the drive does it still come up with dialogs like this when I try to copy some files about ?

time machine bullshit

time machine bullshit

FU apple, stop thinking you can software engineer yourselves out of the need to provide your user with control.

What do i need from a backup system

exact copy of data including invisible files and locked files
a synchronised incremental backup, only copying the changes from the source to the destination and removal from destination of any files removed from the source.
for the backup not be larger size wise than the original on a source and destination drive which are two seperate identical drives, ie the backup process should not add so much fluff the backup wont fit on a drive of the same size as the source ?
the backup to be in the form of a standard file structure ? so tis not dependant on a particular peice of software to be accessed, and can be moved into place in case of failure of the original drive
if versioning of files is to exist then that to be user controllable to the amount of extra space allocated to such a task ?
to have these backups occurring on a schedule, with email reports of backup failures and error event and setable disk space warning ?
an clear and sensible interface that gives clearly labelled controls and all options and subtlety controllable by the user ?

lacies silverkeeper sucessfully provided 90% of this, time machine is inept and uncontrollable in my opinion.

2012 imac drip feed – finally features coming weve requested for a long time – non glossy – display input – USB3 ?

Along with the Anti reflective or should they phrase it correctly and admit theyre own mistake and call it “non glossy” ? theyll probably throw in USB3 since thunderbolt is overpriced ? and display input since they removed it on us ? just to mightily anger all the people who just bought the previous model ! GGRRRR
