there used to be a point in history i’m not sure when it was, where it was just about possible to watch all the good films that came out or play all the good games that came out on the platforms one owned, im not sure when exactly in history we transitioned to a point whereby keeping up with these things became impossible, but to be honest it was probably the eighties when that point was passed. Today i can barely keep up with any of this stuff:
Current music :
i have given up with being upto date with the music scene, and sacrificed this for other forms of entertainment (this perhaps means i must be heading for middle age, that period in which interest in music completely fades ?) partly because grime, RnB, garage, new rock, rap and 90% of DJ made music, i consider as some kind aural mind enema worth avoiding, not that music from the past was much better, but some of it will at least stand the test of time, but most music written today feels disposable after the first verse, perhaps thats just my aged cynicism kicking in.
Current cinema :
I have given up with going to see films at cinema’s, this was mainly due to most cinematic plots and devices becoming so transparent to me as to make nearly all hollywood produced films vomit worthy.
Current gaming :
of the three categorys so far gaming is the only one i try to keep upto date on and that is often vicariously, with the proliferation of digital platforms both mobile, console, computers its is now impossible to keep up with games, i try to but that mainly ends up being third hand consumption of games, ie by proxy : watching someone else play the game on an online video. Its easier and quicker than playing it myself, and I can switch off without feeling the money I paid is going to waste. Or as with massively addictive never-ending games like MMO’s none being mentioned but you know the one i mean, I had to stop playing because theyre capable of sucking up your entire life with ease, and giving you nothing but over investment and attatchment to a character the game company claims is there property, and is destroying with stats shrinking viagra every game patch, making any progress pointless unless you keep running on their mill.
Current TV :
again without online catch up viewing, i wouldnt be able to in any way current with this either, As i can no longer stand the idea of turning on the Tv and just browsing until something good comes on, nor do i have time to browse listings to prebook recordings either. I deally i need some kind of super inteligent amazon thing that basically recommedns on the basis of previous viewing, but the beebs version of that is horrendous.
Current literature :
Man this one really suffers, I do read but its fading because its not a fast enough medium, and there is so much else to consume that books dont get much of a look in, especially not fiction ? which in reality there lots of fiction in which i get to influence the outcome which I dont get to play gaming wise, let alone trying to indulge in fiction which requires 400 pages of reading, this to a large extent i dont have time for.
Current radio :
man I need to make more time for it, but again finding the good stuff is difficult especially as most of radio nowadays, seems to be so terrible it dilutes the chance of finding the good stuff.
Now my take on all this is, it is not possible to be on top of entertainment of any kind and in fact we shouldn’t bother because it fundamentally just eats your life away, and you have nothing to show for it at the end of the day, does anyone really care what score you got ? nope no-one. And those who dont get distracted by entertainment are the ones buying multiple homes and breeding ahead of you, my recommendation just switch of the noise of the modern media, and concentrate, if the modern media has left you with any kind of concentration, on moving your life forward and perhaps producing some stuff for other people to consume, rather than consuming yourself.
