I was assured by the Royal Mail literature I obtained about the introduction of the new postage system that the new size differentiation ie
Would mean 90% of postage prices would be the same or less as before the new system, what a surprise that having just adjusted my ebay postal price templates in garagesale that all of my prices had to increase by 25 -50p in general just to cover the new postage cost itself, let alone include the extra on top of that in order to cover packaging costs etc, ie that 10% of postal price increase seems to fall squarely on ebay sellers in general with all their awkward shaped packages sent cheaply via first and second class etc, this was what these new changes were designed to prejudice against.
I pretty much surmised this new system was specifically a stealth tax on ebay sellers by the post office, ie the royal mail wants more of a portion of your money, what with packaging costs, the new postal cost increase, ebay auction and selling fees, paypal fees etc, certain low price goods will now become precarious to sell on the basis that postage price increase may tip the balance and deter bidders from buying low price items that can be bought cheaper on the high street etc once postage is taken into account. The Loss of viability for these small business operations will only be mourned by the individuals who operate them.
The knock-on of this people might list less items and ultimately less post for royal mail, less revenue etc. Strange that the mail watchdog couldn’t prevent this ? Yet they seem endlessly obsessed that basic stamp prices dont go up ? why ? how many private people are sending letters nowadays when electronic communication is so popular, truth is I reckon a basic stamp increase effects large business’es more, and theyre are more organised and better lobbyers against price hikes that effect them than the individual home grown business(hence how franking prices appear not to have increased ? for instance). The post watchdogs have failed to protect the public against this targeted pricehike on ebay sellers, a new and important part of the emergent home grown small business economy that saves the environment by recycling often second hand goods, enables some poor people to build small businesses to escape the poverty trap etc. ? it would seem fairer overall to me to put your basic stamp price up by say 2p on first and second class stamps instead as this effects everyone and is a fairer way of dealing with the revenue problem of the royal mail more effectively than specifically targeting just the packet post users, or why not target junk bulk mailers with more expensive pricing to boost royal mail revenues, as quite obviously no-one really wants junk mail post coming through there door in the first place , and the royal mail seems unable to stop it, I guess Junk mail is too good a revenue for them.
No doubt these musings would be interpreted by the royal mail as a call for basic stamp price increase, as if ? the answer would be : only if it had been instead of the current pricing system they have introduced and not as additional.
