Couldnt agree with you more ian , the quality of the picture of some of these releases is appalling. especially the older films, I think they spend little money to ensure the quality of them, Hd for them is just a way of coining extra revenue. It seems that they will colour correct and noise remove as these can be automated very sucessfuly, but they wont go to the stage automated dust and scratch removal or at worst manual dust an scratch removal.
Some of the films dont look like they were cleaned before they were digitised, Also why is it they never seem to archive the original print after release for just the purpose of restoration at some point later, some of the dust in the terminator 1 release looks like it came direct from being run a thousand times in a cinema. Digital restoration is now fully capable of producing amazing results it just seems they dont want to spend the money on it ? Also these films highlight how the age of some these cameramen often meant they couldnt get the camera subject in focus half the time too, thats unions sometimes, with any camera theryre should be an assistant with sharp eyesight as a focus checker on all shot, so the subject at least when intended to be is in focus
