Intel if your going to throw $7.8 billion around at least build fab plants for lower nm chips with the money or something, do what your good at ? divesting money into an antivirus software maker is pretty crazy considering, antivirus companys are two a penny as in theres dozens of them, and open source and free seems a logical route for the antivirus software model to go ? as for wasting money building security protection into mobile devices, and talk about building processing power in order to throw it away, mobile devices running antivirus software ? jeesh that sounds horrendous ?, at least if your going to buy an antivirus software company, buy a good one like kapersky ? but perhaps windows phones are going to need it ? another reason to avoid windows phones if they share any vulnerable windows codebase ? look the day i have to run antivirus software on my mobile device is the day we need to work out a different methodology of dealing with the issue ? or maybe this is a cinch for intel, you buy the company that is going to waste the processor cycles you manufacture ?
maybe its just a huge tax write off ? I doubt mcafee are complaining. christ theyll be building super yachts and mansions for forever on that kind of payout ?
I have to be honest its one way to get into software ? and diversify but i think someone added some zeros to the negotiation figures.
But what really grates with me if im going to pay £200 for a quad core i7 and stomach it, they at least have to invest the profits from my purchase in something decent not fucking mcafee, and at 60% over its share evaluation ? is otellini on an insider kickback deal or something and really 60% over the stock price, how the hell is mcafee going to make them $7.8 billion in profit over the next whatever years ? Intel dont waste your money on mcafee lower the cost of an i7 980x instead, so that i can afford bloody afford a 12 core machine instead at some point ie reduce you margins instead of wasting money on rubbish like that ?
sometimes diversifying is a mistake, stick to what you do better than other people its a pivotal point in the chip industry you need to invest in lower volts more powerfull cheaper chips ie business as usual , keeping moores law going etc software is transitory, cpu design is a skill so few do well. and you just ballsed up with sandy bridge, so you should be investing to make sure that doesnt happen again and doing a recall where necessary not wasting money on mcafee. there is never enough processing power its a given, my still renders still take an hour to render on a 512 core render farm on the web that costs allot of money to use, so yes i really can use as much processing power as you can generate cheaply ? regardless of if you think is enough power at whatever price point, after all the price at which people expect nice rendered images isn’t increasing ? also you need to develop competition to arm ?
Otellini is quoted as saying “We will use all of the assets at our disposal to win this segment,†when talking of arm processors used in tablets, presumably hes excluding the $7.7 billion hes throwing at macafee in that statement ?
