The Ukraine and its dodgy spam serving ip ranges

place this ip range in your ban list >

91.207.4.0-91.207.9.255

and never buy or trade these ip numbers as they have a deep history of spam serving, all related to some entity called steephost, you can whois one the ips if you want more info, theyre address seems to point to a field in a small town in the ukraine. some people in the Ukraine obviously think it useful to spend they’re time spamming websites, problem is these people dont realise that they just encourage large numbers of people to start blocking ukrainian ip ranges in general, which harms the ukraine’s reputation on the internet stage.

It also reduces the number of useable ip numbers in general as those ip’s that have been used for spamming becoming blacklisted, making them worthless from a resale or re-use perspective.

Thunderbolt Adoption

take some of that cash mountain stop wasting it on shareholder paybacks and pile it into subsidizing the adoption of thunderbolt as a standard and make it happen as a standard ?! is not rocket science make a loss on it so the standard gets adopted ? sony did it with bluray initially, you may have to do the same, people need large fast storage ie 3tb drives running as fast externally as they do internally on a sata chain, and the cost of an external thunderbolt case should cost no more than £20.00 extra price wise than a USB3 equivalent equivalent hard drive. get to scale with it ? to get costs down for third party people adding thunderbolt to an external mechanical hard drive that can run at 1.5gbps or 150MB’s a sec max anyway, should only add £30.00 to the hard drive cost as thats all the benefit it offers from a financial perspective compared to USB3 ? from the purchasers perspective. we aren’t all millionaires with apple shares and bonus etc. so we can afford to add £200 to a device worth £100 in order to have thunderbolt on it.

Godus Advice

Hi all at 22 Cans :)

backed your project :

RE Godus Design: As a person who adored populous and populous II on the amiga and had the skills to knock up a serial modem cable and play against friends, I must say this :

I think the reason why populous was such genius was to some extent its simplicity and its limitations helped focus the strategy play because theyre was less distraction, isometric or fixed viewpoints is not so much a limitation in RTS games take starcraft, rotating the camera around massively and zooming in and out all the time would just distract the player from the strategy at hand, games arent about being all things to all players. make the camera auto itself about allot without zooming about and flailing distractingly around, maybe have a free camera mode perhaps for players in a non match modes single player etc. and godsims in a way are designed for isometric from above type viewpoint, as you are a god and gods usually view from above the disdainful hubbub of the little peoples lives, they only need their obedience and prayer to enhance their own power.

Perhaps also put sprogging in the game once a house unit is at full power ;) or maybe thats too much micromanagement maybe as an easter egg just an animation ;)

I also played Powermonger which in my opinion was somehow not as good as populous and populous’s 2 player serial play was most fun and addictive, regardless of how beautiful powermonger was, it was slightly too complex and the graphics packed into the screen, and I never mastered it in the same timeframe of populous, almost anyone could start playing populous and within a 30 minutes be able to handle all the controls and be manically working toward gaining enough mana to wipe the opponent out, eventually leading to a point within an hour or 3 where one player was either defeated or conceded.

as an example of one of the best examples of modern smartphone games that had a brilliantly linear learning curve, i would say plants v zombies exceeded angry birds for example in its simplicity to learn, addictive play, stretching the players skills but never being too hard and cause the player to give up.

I think that main game mode for godus if its an RTS multiplayer competitive Godsim, should be that the games / match length can be tailored to say a certain timeframe or perhaps have conditions settable where the game is over explicitly in the sense that recovery for the losing opponent is not possible, this would then make a game where online matches and leaderboards were possible, I know this sounds a bit competetive, but maybe there could be other modes of play too for those – not interested, in multiplayer match style games.

Dungeon Keeper I didnt play but I would say, dont make a game which is to complex with too many things fo the player to manage so as to keep the stress levels low and the fun high, Ie let the population on the landmass decide the best spot to place a mine on the basis of resource, settlers though fantastic was a little complex in this respect even, maybe the player help them uncover the resource by land movement, the flat land principle and they build bigger houses mechanic is a good one to be retained from populous agree, I think the player placing houses is unnecessary let the population pick the best spot on the basis of land movement as populous did, alleviate the player from having to micro manage everything that happens in the game. for instance i dont in competitive play want have to spend my time rotating a house in 3d to place it on the landscape.

And this is where i would say black and white turned me off, It was an amazing game revolutionary clever beautiful etc but imo it was too complex, it didn’t grab the players imagination in the same way that simple populous did after 10 minutes of play, even now If I had two serial linked amigas I would prefer to play populous over Black and White … because populous was like a superb and addictive electronic board game with just enough complexity too make it interesting but not so much as to flounder the player with controls.

Let the little people in Godus execute intelligence as to what to build and where to allow the player to concentrate their strategy on the larger scale issues. make the number of players selectable after all an 8 way game, is probably going to take allot longer than a 2 player game ? And I think some games today are in danger of being to big for peoples time budgets, and like a good film, there is something satisfying about finishing a multiplayer match in say an hour or two, as their is a sense of satisfaction and completion for both players one way or another ;)

The ability to scale player numbers and fixed selection of map sizes to enable a time scale of average completion for a game, so that someone can come back from work and say right I want to play a competetive godsim match for 45 minutes and have a satisfying complete game in that fixed timeframe and then maybe at the weekend they want a four hour match etc more players larger map etc, But I think the idea of fixed map sizes is a good one as it limits games going on for ever etc. make it just like populous so that the rader map shows the whole of the map being played on.

Its that sense of completion which is a good thing with a board game if monopoly or snakes and ladders or the dark tower went on for weeks on end you would lose the sense of fun and place or reason in the game, so either have matches or something meaning I can choose how much time I put into the game in advance roughly and get a satisfying conclusion. As there are too many ginormous games on the market and as populous proved you could have a match based based godsim, and not enough games that have that satisfaction of conclusion that board games have. This conclusion-al element does not mean the game is short as you can have variation in game length and maps and themes and play many matches, ie one match isnt the games full extent either. just dont make it so standard play last 3 weeks a match ;(

and dont have character development so that some players can bring more powerful gods into the game etc, make it so that only the players with the best strategy bringing it fresh every time from the ground up … win, ie all players start off equal apart from their position on the map :) its just the strategy that tells. or perhaps like scissors paper stones they can choose from three god archetypes and their set of powers and dependant on what other players selects this impacts the gameplay style / strategy a player takes etc ? shrug something like that.

admittedly my advice might sound too much like making a populous remake which godus isn’t fully, but I certainly think take most from populous imo.

wow think i might have waited too long for that 22 penneth worth, but anyway good luck im sure i’ll like whatever your smart team at 22 cans comes up with ;)

OS X lion and 2gig memory, terribly slow 4gb should be the minimum

lion is a memory hog and awful when it comes to paging in and out to disk, had a client on a 24″ imac that happened to have 2gb of memory, he got away with that memory spec on snow leopard, on lion his machine was practically unuseable directly after the lion install. client angry and frustrated upgrading to 4gb memory the crappy max on this 24″ imac can take … cheers apple, notebook technology in desktop replacement machines ? ADVICE to all out there make sure your mac has 4gb minimum before installing Lion. The amount of memory safari uses is obscene compared to chrome. and the full screen effects are a waste of bandwidth from a remote support perspective. Apple get worse by the month.

tip for anyone suffering in lion with 2gb ram, run the major memory hogging apps in 32 bit mode (tickbox selectable when “command I”-ing on the keyboard the selected application itself) then restart the program

2012 imac drip feed – finally features coming weve requested for a long time – non glossy – display input – USB3 ?

Along with the Anti reflective or should they phrase it correctly and admit theyre own mistake and call it “non glossy” ? theyll probably throw in USB3 since thunderbolt is overpriced ? and display input since they removed it on us ? just to mightily anger all the people who just bought the previous model ! GGRRRR

Things to improve zinio

Problems / feedback / suggestions >

This form just lost the words ive been typing for the last 20 mins ? Grr

As a person who has had a subscription to the printed version of Macuser, I have a few question and suggestion RE Zinio, prior to buying a subscription

(1) As a person who has stacks of old printed Macuser magazines taking up precious spacein my life, I can ill afford, I would to a large extent wish to convert these printed versions into their digital equivalents, But the price for old issues of £1.87 means it would cost me £46.75 to replace a years worth of old printed issues ? considering a new subscription is £29.99 it seems to me, not a very cost effective way to do this ?

Think also you should have a way of browsing by year and also give a large and increasing discount for purchasing a years back issues at a time, such that the older the issue the deeper the discount ?

Or perhaps as a bonus for current subscribers the ability to download old issues beyond a certain age for free ?

Perhaps a discount for buying in amounts of 6 and 12 back issues at a time etc ?

This would seem to make marketing sense to me compared to charging £1.87 per older back issue as this doesn’t provide me with a cost effective way of converting my old back issues into its digital equivalent ? you might say there would be little demand ? but if feel if such offers were made apparent and obvious to the users of your website on arrival when investigating a particular magazine, with slogans such a s convert those dusty magazine and free up space ? etc

(2) when browsing back issues on the website prior to purchase you need to provide a way selecting particular years issues etc as at the moment I just have x number of pages in chronological order etc, not very sophisticated sorting.

(3) Question how searchable are the magazines presumably they’re not just static jpeg style encrypted PDF’s etc i can search for content ?

(4) Have the adverts been removed on the back issues ? or is this a selectable option with in the Zinio viewer for non current issues ? AS stale deals and offers aren’t something i desire to browse after the event ?

(5) are the text elements in the magazine proper vector artwork or are the pages essentially jpeg’s with limited resolution and heavy file sizes ?

(6) This – “how can we improve” box I wrote into on the survey form has a line wrap wider than the form box itself meaning im having to do crazy sideways scrolling back and forth just to see what i’ve written, please fix this.

(7) In the future the current disadvantage between the printed version and the zinio version of – ‘no covermounts’ needs to be addressed, does or will zinio have support to link to a portion of a zinio or amazon S3 server space that means covermount disk images can be downloaded ?

(8) I like to manage currently my epub and pdf media through Itunes how does or can zinio integrate with that ?

(9) What noticeable effect of DRM is there ? is there a slowdown in any way?

(10) Beyond a certain age of back issue of a magazine is the DRM removed ?

if you insist I can send you photographic evidence of these stacks of printed magazines cluttering up my life ? Ive spoken to Macuser about the problems i talk about in point 1 above, these kinks in digital magazines subscriptions need to be ironed out, although I dont think apples newstand isn’t much of a solution either as apple have decided to take too large a percentage on that one, kind of crippling it imo price wise, but we will see.

barclays banking and bank operations in general archaic and in need of major overhaul

I want proper interest on my bank accounts not the piffling end of year accountancy irritance that is the ridiculous 0.005% or whatever it is you offer as standard. Nor the necessity to manually spend time transferring my moneys around to get better interest rates in other accounts as this is also a waste of existence.

I do not want to support the expense of business advisors who I have not have the need of for the last 15 years in business. Have a business account that offers proper interest on business accounts with limited risk fro a little interest growth with no charges of any sort on positive balances over X, that does not support a clique of barclays advisors, as others who borrow money may need such support, and I do not wish to be lumped with the expense of such employees just because a small proportion of other customers make use of them ?

Tuneup 2.4.2 Now really working much better : Recommend to buy and use advice…

FROM ANCIENTSCREAM : RE TUNEUP 2.4.2 (GOOD NEWS)
Guys RE the New update to Tuneup 2.4.2 and upwards really is a massive improvement, they have and are listening to feedback and the software is definately getting much better.

WELL DONE TUNEUP coding team :)
I’ve experienced much less lockup and much more control in 2.4.2 and allot of the original complaints ive listed have to some extent been fixed, the software is working much better, and certainly Tuneup is still regardless of it’s issues the best software on the mac at what it does.

The improvements in 2.4.2 are such I now have confidence that Tuneup is now a must buy for those with large incorrectly tagged itunes librarys.

ADVICE re tuneup use for an easier time :
Once you begin to get somewhere with tuneup, correcting ‘albums’ it can clearly recognise first, then working on the remaining proportion with manual oversight and input enables you to get to the point of having things tagged correctly, Tuneup works really well with albums and doesn’t do so well with lone tracks with very little basic tag information ie no artist no album etc so its best to process whole albums first, then work on the harder stuff afterwards and this will get you a large amount of progress, It might take you a little while to get your whole collection done, Tuneup is not fire and forget and nor could you expect it to be really, BUT … doing the task without Tuneup in most cases would be a nightmare.

Tip when cleaning tracks : Continue reading
