The inquisitions activity in general was an intellectually and morally bankrupt pissing argument / pub quiz, sinfully commited against the often uneducated masses, by those whose highly limited literacy and knowledge stemmed singularly from an obsession with the corrupted and over-interpretation of one poorly written book. And the underlying purpose of this false dialectic was really to preserve enhance and sustain the absolute dominance and power that the elitist egotistical church held over the general population for their own advantage, Between the jaws of the feudal crown and church power the people had nowhere to escape, and were ground to a disposessed and malliable mass.
Until as the character ‘Joan D’Arc’ portrays, the people fought to create a third way, the idea of state and country, which would eventually learn to moderate the actions of those two jaws upon the people, who in exchange as a whole, agreed to belong to the new propoganda concept of the country. Whether the people really chose this concept of country rather than allegiance to lord or tribe. Perhaps the concept of state with king at its top, was really introduced to the people, by say a poor feudal headmen / king wishing to attain more power, and now disposess the now unruly and mainly self serving knights and network of distributed power, he had originally setup and sustained in the first place, is a different matter.
